Learn About Melanoma

Melanoma

Malignant melanoma cancer occurs from a mutation in pigmented skin cells and is the most aggressive type of skin cancer. It is less common than basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma but can spread to other organs if not diagnosed and treated in its early stage. At the Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center of New Mexico (DSCCNM), we offer video visits and in-office appointments to diagnose melanoma, and treatment from board-certified dermatologists with specialization in dermatologic oncology.

Melanoma often starts on the chest or back in men, and on the legs in women. It also tends to develop on the face, neck, or scalp, but can occur anywhere on the body. Symptoms of melanoma include a new growth or a changing mole or lesion; they are most often black or brown in color but can also be pinkish, tan, or white. The surface may be waxy looking or rough. Because there are many variations, it is very important to schedule a skin cancer screening any time you notice a change in your skin.

With early diagnosis, melanoma skin cancer can be surgically removed. If it has spread to nearby lymph nodes or tissues, the removal of those tissues may also be required. Because melanomas can come back, the skin cancer specialists at DSCCNM provide follow-up care to help patients diagnosed with malignant melanoma as well as other skin malignancies. Living in New Mexico’s sunny climate, a complete skin cancer check is recommended each year.

DSCCNM accepts most health insurance plans. Please call the office at 505-243-7546 or fill out the contact form to schedule an appointment for an in-office or telemedicine visit for a skin cancer screening at the Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center of New Mexico.
